Model Y climbs to No. 2 in Canada's EV rebate claims, weeks before the rebate shrinks

Transport Canada's own data shows the Model Y climbing fast. Here's what the numbers say, and why the January 1 date matters more than your delivery date.

Ontario has no provincial EV rebate, so for GTA buyers the federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) is the one that counts. Transport Canada's September 2026 data shows dealers filed 3,336 EVAP requests for the Tesla Model Y in July to September, second only to the Chevrolet Bolt. On January 1, 2027, the rebate drops from up to $5,000 to up to $4,000 for a battery EV (Transport Canada). Our EVAP 2027 explainer covers how the change works.

How many EVAP rebates did the Model Y get?

I went through Transport Canada's EVAP statistics CSV (September 2026 release, one row per incentive request). Between July 1 and September 30, 2026, there were 34,486 requests: 9,228 in July, 11,015 in August and 14,243 in September.

The Model Y made up 3,336 of them, and the monthly numbers jumped: 193 in July, 757 in August, then 2,386 in September. Only the Chevrolet Bolt had more in the quarter (5,637), and the Chevrolet Equinox EV (3,311) was just behind. Dealers in Ontario submitted 2,394 of the Model Y requests, about 72%.

The rebate amount depends on when the dealer submits your pre-approval, not when you take delivery.

Does the EV rebate drop in 2027?

Yes. Transport Canada says the incentive amounts drop at midnight on January 1, 2027 (EVAP page). The new maximums are $4,000 for a battery EV and $2,000 for a plug-in hybrid (Q&A, question 13).

The detail that matters: the amount depends on the date the dealer submits the eligibility assessment, also called the pre-approval. It isn't based on when you take delivery. A pre-approval submitted in 2026 locks the 2026 amount for 90 days, even if the car arrives in 2027. A car delivered in November 2026 but pre-approved in January 2027 gets the lower 2027 amount.

Does every Model Y qualify?

No. Unless a car is made in Canada, it qualifies only if the final transaction value is $50,000 or less, and options, accessories and dealer fees count towards that. The vehicle also has to be made in Canada or in a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada (Transport Canada Q&A). Check your exact build and price before you count on the rebate. Our EV rebates guide and out-the-door price guide walk through it.

Is there still money left in EVAP?

As of October 1, 2026, $1.92B of the $2.275B program was left (Transport Canada). The program runs until March 31, 2031, or until the money runs out.
