Tesla delivery inspection: panel gaps and defects.
Build quality varies car to car. Owners report everything from a perfect car to misaligned doors. Ten careful minutes at pickup are easier than weeks of service visits later.
Bring these
- A phone flashlight. Delivery bays can be dark.
- Your printable checklist.
- Time. Don't let a busy pickup rush you.
Panel gaps and alignment
Compare left to right, because the two sides should match.
- Doors flush with the body, front and rear, both sides.
- Liftgate: even gaps to the tail lights and the area above the rear camera.
- Frunk hood: even to both fenders.
- Headlights and tail lights sitting even with the bumper.
Service staff often say small gaps are "within spec." Tesla doesn't publish those specs. A gap you can feel with a fingertip on one side but not the other is worth photographing.
Paint and body
- Walk around in daylight if you can, or use your flashlight at an angle.
- Scratches, chips, swirl marks and paint runs, especially on the bumpers, door edges and roof.
- Door jambs and sills, where touch-up paint shows.
- Wheels for curb rash, plus tire pressures on the screen.
Glass, seals and noise
- Windshield and windows for chips or cracks.
- Door seals seated all the way round.
- On the drive home, listen for wind noise at the front pillars. In February 2026 Tesla issued a service bulletin (SB-26-11-001) for some Model Y Standard cars, where the front door glass seals can cause high-pitched A-pillar wind noise at speed. If you hear it, book service and mention the bulletin.
Interior and tech
- Seats, headliner, carpet and the open console for marks.
- Every window, the mirrors, heated seats, the trunk and frunk release, and the charge port.
- Phone key, the key cards, Bluetooth, cameras and the screen.
- Any service alerts on the screen.
Accept, reject or open a ticket?
- Photograph everything before you sign.
- Small cosmetic issues: ask staff to note them, then open a service request in the app before you leave.
- Damage or a clearly misaligned panel: ask whether it can be fixed on the spot. Some owners have refused delivery and been matched to another car. Check your purchase agreement to see what refusing means for you.
- After you accept, book service in the Tesla app with photos. Mobile service can sometimes adjust doors at home.
Common questions
Are Tesla panel gaps normal?
Some variation is common, and service centres often call small gaps within spec. Compare both sides; an obvious difference is worth raising before you accept.
Can I refuse Tesla delivery for panel gaps?
Some owners report refusing a car and being matched to another one. Read your agreement first, because the terms can differ. Raising issues before you sign gives you the most leverage.
What is the Model Y Standard wind noise bulletin?
Tesla service bulletin SB-26-11-001 (February 2026) covers some Model Y Standard cars where the front door glass seals don't meet spec, causing wind noise from the A-pillars at high speed. It's handled on customer complaint.
What if I find a defect after delivery?
Open a service request in the Tesla app with clear photos as soon as possible. New-vehicle warranty covers defects; cosmetic claims are easier right after delivery.
