Buying a used Tesla: what carries over
- The balance of the original battery and drive unit warranty still applies.
- Bought pre-owned from Tesla: the rest of the 4 yr/80,000 km basic warranty, then the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty adds 1 year or 20,000 km. If basic has already expired, you get 1 year or 20,000 km from delivery.
- Selling privately? The warranty follows the car when the ownership transfer is done through Tesla.

Extended service plans (Battery ESA)
Model 3 and Model Y owners may be eligible for the High Voltage Battery and Drive Unit Extended Service Agreement (Battery ESA). It starts the day the original battery and drive unit warranty expires. New Model S and Model X buyers can buy extended service plans that start when the New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires.

Common questions
How long is Tesla's warranty in Canada?
The Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 years or 80,000 km. The battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years, with 160,000 km, 192,000 km or 240,000 km depending on the model, and at least 70% battery capacity (Tesla Canada, checked Oct 20, 2026).
Is the Model Y Standard battery covered for 160,000 or 192,000 km?

Does the warranty transfer if I sell my Tesla?
Yes. The New Vehicle Limited Warranty follows the car and transfers to the new owner when the ownership transfer is done through Tesla.
Do I have to use Tesla service?
For warranty repairs, yes: they're done at a Tesla Service Center. For non-warranty repairs and maintenance you can use Tesla or another shop, but Tesla isn't responsible for problems caused by third-party work.
Can I extend my Tesla warranty in Canada?
Model 3 and Model Y owners may be eligible for the High Voltage Battery and Drive Unit Extended Service Agreement (Battery ESA), which starts when the battery warranty ends. Extended service plans are offered for new Model S and Model X.
Is a used Tesla still under warranty?
The balance of the original battery and drive unit warranty carries over. Pre-owned cars bought from Tesla get the rest of the 4-year/80,000 km basic warranty, then 1 extra year or 20,000 km.
