Battery

Tesla battery health and degradation in Canada.

Every Tesla battery loses some capacity over time, and Tesla's Canadian warranty promises at least 70% of the original capacity for 8 years. The distance limit depends on the model: 160,000 km for the Model Y RWD (including the Model Y Standard) and Model 3 Premium RWD, 192,000 km for Premium AWD and Performance versions, and 240,000 km for Model S, Model X and Cybertruck (Tesla Canada, Vehicle Warranty). You can see an estimate of your battery's health in the car under Controls > Service > Battery Health (Tesla Model Y Owner's Manual).

Quick answer: in the car, tap Controls > Service > Battery Health. Anything at or above 70% within 8 years and your model's km limit is inside Tesla's Canadian warranty.

Step 1: Find out which battery you have

  1. Park the car and tap Controls on the touchscreen.
  2. Tap Software, then Additional Vehicle Information.
  3. If it lists High Voltage Battery type: Lithium Iron Phosphate, you have an LFP pack (like my Model Y Standard). If no battery type is listed, it's a nickel-based pack (Owner's Manual, High Voltage Battery Information).

This matters because the recommended daily charge limit differs between battery types.

Step 2: Check battery health on the touchscreen

  1. Shift into Park.
  2. Tap Controls, then Service.
  3. Tap Battery Health. The car shows an estimate based on its battery management system, compared with the expected retention for your battery type, age and use (Tesla Model Y Owner's Manual).
  4. Take a photo or screenshot of the screen so you can compare it over time, or show it to a buyer.

Step 3 (optional): Run the Battery Health Test

Tesla recommends this only if you have a concern about capacity. Before you start, the manual lists these requirements:

  1. Go to Controls > Service > Battery Health and start the test.
  2. Leave the car plugged in. It can take up to 24 hours and drains the battery below 10%, possibly to 0%.
  3. Climate control and Sentry Mode are off while it runs. Cancel the test before unplugging.

Heads-up: since software update 2025.26, owners report the test is gone from many cars, depending on model and age (third-party report: Not a Tesla App).

Step 4: Worried? Book service in the Tesla app

  1. Open the Tesla app and pick your car.
  2. Tap Service and start a new service request.
  3. Describe the battery concern and attach your Battery Health screenshot.

Battery health itself is shown in the car; the app is how you get Tesla to look at it. Menu names can change between app versions.

Why the range number isn't a battery test

Tesla's warranty itself notes that range estimates are "an imperfect measure of Battery capacity" because other things change them (Tesla New Vehicle Limited Warranty, Canada). In a Canadian winter, a cold battery shows less available range and charges more slowly, and that's temporary, not degradation. See how the LFP battery behaves in the cold and preconditioning before you drive or charge.

Common questions

How do I check my Tesla's battery health?

Go to Controls > Service > Battery Health for an estimate. The optional Battery Health Test needs an AC charger of at least 5 kW, under 20% charge and up to 24 hours, and has been removed from many cars since software update 2025.26.

How much battery degradation does Tesla's warranty cover in Canada?

Tesla guarantees at least 70% battery capacity for 8 years, with a distance limit of 160,000 km, 192,000 km or 240,000 km depending on the model.

Does cold weather damage a Tesla battery?

Cold reduces the range shown and slows charging temporarily. That is not permanent capacity loss.

Is the range on the screen an accurate battery health check?

No. Tesla's warranty states range estimates are an imperfect measure of battery capacity because other factors affect them.

Does the battery warranty transfer when I sell my Tesla?

Coverage runs 8 years or the km limit from original delivery. Later private owners must get warranty service in the original warranty region; the United States and Canada are treated together.
