Latvia has cleared Tesla's supervised driver-assistance system for its roads. On October 26, 2026, Latvia's road safety directorate, CSDD, recognised the provisional EU type approval issued by the Netherlands' vehicle authority, RDW, according to a notice from Latvia's Ministry of Transport. In Europe the system is now called Tesla Assisted Driving, formerly Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla's European account said the same day that the "rollout begins soon".
What did Latvia decide?
Latvia's road safety directorate (Ceļu satiksmes drošības direkcija, or CSDD) recognised the Netherlands' provisional EU type approval for Tesla's driver-assistance system, Latvia's Ministry of Transport said on October 26. The Dutch vehicle authority, RDW, issued that approval. The ministry said CSDD reviewed RDW's documentation, worked with RDW and other member states' approval authorities, and looked at information from Tesla, including changes to lower the maximum speed-offset threshold, reset a manually set speed offset after each drive, and strengthen driver monitoring.
The ministry describes Tesla Assisted Driving as a Level 2 system that can keep to speed, brake, steer, change lanes and go through intersections while following a navigation route. Drivers don't need to keep their hands on the wheel at all times, but a cabin camera checks that they're watching the road, and the system can become temporarily unavailable if warnings are ignored. It will only work on the Tesla models and software listed in RDW's approval.
CSDD: Drivers keep "full responsibility" for following traffic rules while using the system.
What did the regulator warn drivers about?
CSDD said drivers keep full responsibility for following traffic rules and for the consequences of any violation or crash, must watch traffic themselves, must be ready to take over at any moment, and may not use a smartphone while driving. It also said snow, mud and salt can disrupt the system in Latvia, that it may not work properly on gravel roads, and that it may hand control back to the driver without warning in those conditions.
Latvia's Ministry of Economics said on October 27 that it had worked on the question with the Ministry of Transport and CSDD and called the decision an important step for Latvia's openness to new technology and investment.
What did Tesla say?
Tesla's European account posted "Now approved in Latvia. Rollout begins soon" on October 26 (Tesla Europe on X). It didn't give a date. In its Q3 2026 Update, filed October 21, Tesla said FSD (Supervised) was available in nine EU countries and that more than 100,000 European customers had driven over 160 million kilometres with it. Tesla didn't give a new country count with the Latvia post, so we're not adding one.
Is this the EU vote?
No. Latvia's decision is a national recognition of the Dutch approval. It's separate from any EU-wide decision, which hasn't happened.
What about Canada?
Nothing changes here. Tesla Canada lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 a month and says it requires active driver supervision (Tesla Canada). See our FSD in Canada guide.
