What "Level 3" means

"Level 3" is the everyday name for DC fast charging: high-power public chargers that feed the battery directly, as opposed to the Level 1 (household outlet) and Level 2 (240 V) charging most people do at home. Tesla Superchargers are one kind of DC fast charger. The glossary has short definitions, and our home charging guide covers Level 1 and Level 2.

Fast chargers are for road trips and top-ups away from home. How fast a car actually charges depends on the car, the charger and conditions such as battery temperature.

Petro-Canada, FLO and other networks also run fast chargers in Ontario. We left them out of this table because we couldn't open and check their official pages while writing it. We'll add rows once we can cite them.

Ivy on the 401 and 400 (ONroute)

According to the Ontario government (June 12, 2023), EV fast chargers were installed at all 20 renovated ONroute stations along the 400 and 401. Every station has at least two chargers, busier ones have more, and they are open to all drivers and vehicle types on a pay-per-use basis. Ivy installs, owns and operates them. The same release said three more stops, Maple, Ingersoll and Newcastle, would get fast chargers during renovations planned for 2023 to 2025.

An earlier ONroute release (Feb 23, 2022) said Ivy's ONroute chargers offer speeds of up to 150 kW.

Pricing history: in its June 12, 2023 release, the province said Ivy charged 40 cents a minute. That is a 2023 figure, not today's price. Check the Ivy app or the charger for current pricing.

Electrify Canada

Electrify Canada says you pay for the energy your vehicle receives, no matter the temperature, battery size or how long the session takes. All its chargers accept Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards. In the app, the free Pass membership shows real-time availability and lets you start sessions from your phone. Pass+ adds a monthly fee and savings of up to 20% on charging. The app also bills any idle fees and taxes to your saved card at the end of a session.

Fast charging vs charging at home

Each network sets its own rates, which can vary by area and time of day, so check the app or the charger screen. To see what your own kilometres cost at home on Ontario rates, use the Ontario charging calculator. For a Tesla on the road, see Supercharger cost per km.

Winter fast charging

Battery temperature affects fast-charging speed in winter. If your car can precondition the battery before a fast charger, use it: our preconditioning guide explains how on a Tesla. See Model Y winter range for more on Ontario winters.
