Model Y Standard tire pressure in the cold.
Last updated:
Three weeks in, the only thing my Model Y Standard needed was air. When the GTA went from summer to fall, the tires deflated on their own. Here's what I run and how I stay on top of it.
What happened to mine
Three weeks into owning my 2026 Model Y Standard, the car has had zero issues and no funny sounds. The one thing I noticed: as soon as the weather changed from summer to fall, my tires lost pressure on their own. Nothing was wrong with them. You just have to stay on top of it.
I keep the stock tires at 42 PSI all the time so the car stays at peak efficiency.

Check your own number first
42 PSI is what I run on my car's stock tires. The official number for your car is on the tire placard on the driver's door pillar, and that's the one to follow, especially if you have different wheels or winter tires. The Model Y Standard has no tire pressure sensors or readout, so a tire gauge is the only way to spot a drop. Everything else the Standard skips is in what the Model Y Standard has and doesn't.
Why it drops when it gets cold
Air contracts as it cools, so the same amount of air reads lower on a cold morning, even with no leak. In Ontario that usually shows up the first few cold weeks of fall, then again with every deep cold snap. I haven't measured exactly how much mine drops per degree, so I won't give you a number.
How I keep on top of it
- Check all four tires with a tire gauge when the car has been sitting, before you drive. Warm tires read higher. (The Model Y Standard has no tire pressure sensors, so the screen won't show your pressures.)
- Top up to your placard number with a portable inflator at home or the air pump at a gas station.
- Check again after the next big temperature drop.
- Low pressure costs you efficiency, and in a Canadian winter you don't want to give away any range. See Model Y Standard winter range.
Getting ready for winter
If you're swapping to winter tires, set them to the pressure on your placard or the tire shop's recommendation for that size. My notes on tires are in Model Y Standard winter tires, and the rest of the routine upkeep is on the maintenance page.
FAQ
What tire pressure should a Tesla Model Y Standard be at?
I keep the stock tires on my 2026 Model Y Standard at 42 PSI for peak efficiency. Always confirm against the tire placard on your driver's door pillar, which is the official number for your car.
Why does my Tesla's tire pressure drop in the fall?
Cold air takes up less space, so pressure reads lower when the temperature drops, even without a leak. Mine dropped as soon as the weather went from summer to fall.
Does low tire pressure hurt Model Y range?
Running below the recommended pressure costs efficiency, which is why I keep mine topped up, especially heading into a Canadian winter.
Where do I see tire pressure on a Model Y Standard?
You don't: the Model Y Standard has no tire pressure sensors or readout on the screen. Check all four with a tire gauge, ideally when the tires are cold.
I film all of this on my own 2026 Model Y Standard. Watch on The Electric Standard on YouTube.
