FSD explained

What is Tesla FSD? Full Self-Driving (Supervised), explained for non-owners

FSD (Supervised) is Tesla's driver-assistance software. It can steer, change lanes, take turns and follow navigation while you supervise. It does not make the car autonomous: Tesla says it needs "a fully attentive driver, who is prepared to take over at any moment" (Tesla Support Canada).

How Tesla FSD works, in plain English

Tesla's cars use exterior cameras with 360-degree visibility, and Tesla trains the FSD software on anonymous real-world driving data from its fleet (Tesla Canada). The software does the driving tasks; you watch the road and take over when needed. "Supervised" means you're still the driver. Improvements arrive through over-the-air software updates, with no dealer visit.

What FSD can do

Per Tesla, FSD (Supervised) handles route navigation, steering, lane changes and parking under your active supervision. It can also come to you across a parking lot when you call it from the Tesla app, and park itself in perpendicular and parallel spots (Tesla Canada).

See it for yourself: watch FSD at night on my Model Y Standard, or my first drive on FSD.

What FSD can't do yet

It isn't a self-driving car, and it doesn't handle everything smoothly. If you look away for too long, the car warns you and eventually switches FSD off for the rest of the trip; repeat that enough and FSD is suspended for a week (Tesla Support Canada). Here's where FSD still struggles on real roads.

What you get without FSD

Every new Tesla in Canada comes with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, which keeps your speed and following distance, plus active safety features. With cruise control alone, Tesla says "you are still responsible for steering" (Tesla Support Canada, Autopilot). Enhanced Autopilot is no longer sold; used cars that have it keep it.

Is FSD the same as a self-driving car?

No. Tesla says the currently enabled features "do not make the vehicle autonomous" (Tesla Support Canada). It's driver assistance: you're legally the driver the whole time. Legal details for Canada are on my main FSD page.

What it's like from the driver's seat

I use FSD (Supervised) on my own car around the GTA. For me, the big win is less fatigue on long highway runs, at night and in stop-and-go traffic, while I keep my eyes on the road. Watch FSD at night on my Model Y Standard.

How to try FSD in Canada

FSD (Supervised) is a C$99/month subscription in Canada that you can cancel any time (Tesla Support Canada). New Teslas come with a 30-day free trial, or 3 months instead if you order your first Tesla with an owner's referral link (they don't stack). FSD doesn't transfer to a new car. Hardware and versions, in short

Features differ by car hardware; your app shows what yours supports (Tesla app → Upgrades → Software Upgrades; some cars need a paid pre-requisite upgrade first, per Tesla Support Canada). See which FSD version your car gets, or FSD price, free trial and rules in Canada.

What Tesla says is next (Tesla's stated plans)

Tesla's own FSD page says that "with Full Self-Driving (Unsupervised), autonomous driving will be made possible, unlocking our fleet of robotaxis and making Cybercab a reality" (Tesla Canada). It also says features "are designed to become more capable over time" (Tesla Support Canada).

These are Tesla's stated plans, not features you can buy. Tesla doesn't promise timelines, and says availability depends on regulatory approval, which may take longer in some places.

FAQ

What does FSD stand for?

Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Tesla's name for its most advanced driver-assistance package. Supervised means a fully attentive driver is required.

Does a Tesla drive itself?

No. With FSD (Supervised) the car can steer, brake and navigate, but you must watch the road and be ready to take over at any moment. Tesla says the features do not make the vehicle autonomous.

What is the difference between Autopilot and FSD?

In Canada, new Teslas come with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and active safety features, and you steer. FSD (Supervised) adds steering, lane changes, turns and navigation under your supervision. Enhanced Autopilot is no longer sold; used cars that have it keep it.

Can I try FSD before buying a Tesla?

New Teslas include a 30-day free FSD (Supervised) trial, or 3 months instead if you order your first Tesla with an owner's referral link. The two do not stack.

Do I need to own a Tesla to subscribe to FSD?

Yes. Only the Tesla account that owns the vehicle can subscribe to FSD (Supervised).
